John Dubrow
Take a look at John's paintings- he works from direct observation, often setting up an easel outside with these large canvases!
Please notice these characteristics of his work:
• Clear use of SHAPES of COLOR and VALUE to describe the subject.
• Use of a LIMITED PALETTE of colors.
• Bold, thick layers of paint applied with brush and knives.
Here's the link to more of his work@ http://johndubrow.com/

I'M OUT TODAY- WEDNESDAY
Hello,
I'm out of school until Wednesday- I'm with my daughter at the National History Day Event in Washington , it's a pretty cool competition for high school kids who create projects (presentations, web sites, posters, video, etc) about events in history. You guys would do well in this competition with your artistic skills and creative ideas.
If you want to see more about it go here @ http://www.nhd.org/About.htm
Please note that your 20 X30 is due TODAY, if you want it in the competition! I set up a sign on the shelf next to our paints to show you where to leave your work. I also told the other art teachers to look for your work when they hang the show today. They are expecting you to pass in the work today! :-) If your work is very wet, you could leave it standing on edge in the art office, or on the shelf next to the sign.
Please take home your older painting work this week!
Wednesday we will be cleaning up the studio, then ALL presentations are on Thursday!
Please check the blog daily for more updates this week! Email me if you have questions.
Have a great day!

GREGORY MACHNESS
A great example of someone who has a strong foundation in painting with VALUE, Machness is also able to "loosen up" in these paintings. Notice how he manipulates the SHARP and SOFT edges to create a visual distortion of the image......very cool effect.
He was just on the cover of Communication Arts Magazine's Illustration Annual! A very high honor, that will send lots of illustration work his way-
See more of his work here @ http://www.richardsolomon.com/artists/gregory-manchess/?id=1244
Here's his website @ http://www.manchess.com/
And a video of him painting the image above, here @ http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8OVU7tKxki8
Listen to how he talks about "sculpting" the forms in his painting with VALUE, then playing with colors AFTERWARDS. He also talks about how creative people think "differently", and that ability to ENVISION inspires others.

20 X 30 Project!!!!
Here are the first requirements for your 20X 30....
• Develop your "Theme" for the 20 X30
• You must choose and post which "Category, or Challenge" your theme fits under...
• Create, and post on your blog, a "brainstorm web". The web should have at least 10 "branches" working off a theme.
The branches are more specific objects that relate to the theme...
Remember that the theme is a "big idea", something you can not touch!
Here's an example of a web, some can become elaborate and beautiful!

PIERRE BONNARD
This French artist, (1867-1947) built on the color mixing ideas of Monet (Impressionists) and developed these rich paintings. Look how he uses changes in color TEMPERATURE as well as COMPLEMENTS to make depth and vibrancy in these paintings.
Also, notice that his paintings are not overly detailed ( like Vermeer), but rely more on color and basic forms to describe the scene!!! These interior scenes are just his excuse to try out ideas with color.
